Thoughts behind this drone-insect:
The Whirlybird is created as a loving tribute to both the bumblebee and the helicopter. The bumblebee has the happiest buzz, and its activity in the summer spreads joy. My intention with The Whirlybird is to bring a smile to the viewer’s face while also paying homage to the insects’ tireless work in creating the foundation for nourishment—both for their own existence and for humans.
My thoughts behind the four pollinator drones can be seen as a commentary on the decline of insects and the biodiversity crisis. When real insects are gone, and pollinators are still needed for crops and flowers, human-made “aliens” like this might become the solution.
Each of the drones has a helipad landing zone with a single letter. Together, they spell the word: HELP
Habitat:
Designed as a drone landing pad with the letter “P.”
Materials:
Copper frame, aluminum, and colored foil.
